    Friday Meanderings 8/31

LOL, well that makes two weeks in a row I missed my normal Monday slot.  Oh well, I will get this out when I can.  I KNOW I will miss it next week as it is Labor Day and I will be traveling with the family and hosting my Fantasy Football draft...On to the show

    The Project
After months of teasing you about "The Project", it has finally arrived.  Myself and Chuck have begun reviewing Televisions from a gamers perspective.  The initial review is of the Westinghouse SK-32H240S 32" LCD TV, which can be found at both GamingNexus and XboxAmerica.  Some time in the near future (say, next week), Chuck will have a review up on another, larger TV.  I wont spoil the make and model for him.  We hope that these two initial reviews will open additional doors in the future, as we plan to be very busy at CES 08 in January meeting with folk from the various companies.

    GamingNexus
The new column "Won't someone think of the Children" is going very well.  As long as the ESRB keep posting new ratings, I am good to go.  Check out the latest installment here:

    XboxAmerica
Another week, another membership milestone.  Sometime in the last few days, XboxAmerica added its 1,500th member.  It may not sound like much, but for a site that started as a State specific (XboxOhio), we have grown significantly as the word has gotten out about our forums and community.  I have never been around such a great bunch of people while frequenting game forums.

The staff search is about over, as we have narrowed the list to the finalists.  We hope to begin contacting people with offers shortly.

    Here and There
Well, several weeks back my 52" DLP TV (Toshiba 52HM84) essentially blew up.  The bulb was replaced for the second time in 27 months and now there are issues with the secondary power supply to the light engine.  While DLPs are great sets for TV or gaming, beware of the HM84 and HM95 series from Toshiba.  The light engines are poor and the bulbs get consumed faster than Takeru Kobayashi's stack at a Hot Dog eating contest.

    Friday Meanderings 8/24

Well, I missed my Monday article, so I figured I would toss out a Friday version this week because I haven't posted in a while.  Free time is becoming scarcer as of late....

    New Column
This week marked the initial article in my new serialized column exclusive to Gaming Nexus.  In the column "Won't someone think of the children?" I take a look at the games the ESRB is rating each week and break them down.  There is always a tasty nugget or two in their weekly release....

    The Project
The Project is about to reach fruition, with the first couple articles to be published next week once Chuck (GamingNexus Editor-In-Chief) gets back from PAX.  I spent the last week compiling my collection of thoughts and observations into a workable piece and just need to put the finishing touches on it.  Unfortunately, the first unit had to be shipped back, but I have been busy trying to line up more companies.

    XboxAmerica
XboxAmerica has literally exploded, with several hundred new members this week alone, and unique hits tripled from last month.  The leaderboards are filling up and we added members from the final two states that did not have anyone registered.

CROOKLYNMAYO, one of our more active members at XboxAmerica, had his first child last week.  Little Ellis Riley and Mommy are both doing great.  I wanted to throw a big shout out to CROOK and his family and wish them well.

The search for new staff members at XboxAmerica went well, with two Graphic Artist candidates that we really like.  There were a slew of people asking about the Staff Writer position(s), and I am still sorting through everyone that applied.  I hope to announce them in within the next week.

Last week, XboxAmerica received some assistance with source information that we hope to use to make the site an even better place.  I will continue to update this as the info becomes available.

    Here and There
My daughter started Kindergarten this week and she was really excited as she rides the Big School bus (not the day care ones) to and from her school.  Hopefully the rest of the school year will be as smooth as Day 1....

Football season is here, and my Fantasy League is stealing some of my attention.  We are beginning our ninth year with the same core group of six (out of 10) guys.  My team is starting off with a weak group of keepers, so here is to a solid draft next week and another Championship!

Next week I hope to cover the goodies coming out of PAX and be able to announce who our new staff is at XboxAmerica.

XboxAmerica looking for new staff members

Its taken a long couple of years, but XboxAmerica has finally passed it's 1,000 member mark, and is adding people daily.  As a result, we are actively looking for Graphic Artists and Staff Writers to help with the site.  If anyone is interested (or knows anyone) head over to XboxAmerica to check it out.

A follow-up on yesterday's Classic Arcade Review rant....

One of my colleagues at GamingNexus, Cyril Lachel, posted a fantastic rebuttal to my piece, with several excellent points that counter my assessment that many reviews of classic arcade titles are being handled unfairly.  While I'm not ready to throw in the towel on my opinion, several of the points Cyril makes have validity.  Have a read over at GamingNexus.

Classic Arcade releases: How do you review these fairly?

Next-gen console gaming is in full swing, and one of the biggest trends (if not THE biggest trend) has been the introduction of classic titles through the various online services.  Whether it is through Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network or the Wii Virtual Console, old-school games are being downloaded at record pace.

This also means that more and more classic titles are being reviewed by gaming media outlets, community sites and fan sites alike.  Unfortunately, I see a trend developing in these reviews that to me, has been a bit unfair.

What I'm talking about is holding these games to the same review standards that titles such as Gears of Way, Warhawk or WiiSports are being held to.  This may seem like a no-brainer as these classic games are being "released" onto next-generation consoles, but I think reviewers find it hard to change the mindset they have while digging into a game.

Personally, I think as a reviewer you have to take a title for what it is, which in many cases is a game that was originally released 15-20 years ago.  When a title such as Track & Field or Rampart hits Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network, I always take the approach of comparing it to its former incarnation, as this is the "gold standard" (good or bad) for this game.  While this platform could have been a coin-op machine in the arcade, on the Intellivision platform or the NES system, the starting point should always be located there.

Granted, there are things that need to be looked at from today's perspective, such as any updating of the graphics, achievements, multi-player, global leaderboards and so on.  These are integral to merging the classic title with today's expectations.   But the core aspect of any classic game review should be "Does this game do justice to the original title?"  Are the quirks, innuendos and fubars that made the original version quaint and fun carried over?

I think the bottom line is that these classic downloadable games are targeted toward the people that played them in the past, with the hopes of exposing a whole new generation to these old-school games.  For a reviewer to blast a title as short, lame or having bad graphics without doing a full comparison to its original incarnation is short-sighted in my opinion.  Yes, almost all classic titles suck in comparison to today's next-gen releases, but do they do justice to the way you remember it back in the day?  That is the question that should be answered when you finish reading the review....

    Welcome to Madden Week

Every year, there is a single week in the gaming industry where both grown adults and children alike leave their places of work and play to be at their favorite retailer at open.  Why?  To secure their copy of the latest Madden game from EA Sports.

Despite Madden 08 being the third release on the Xbox 360 console, this year looks to be the first time that it will actually take advantage of the advanced hardware to produce the smoothest and most graphically enhanced version yet.  With Madden Holiday only a few days away, let’s hope that this year we finally get the game we expected in 2005…

    Monday Meanderings 8/6

Been real busy the last week working on multiple projects, including acquiring and pointing the domain InsideTheNexus.com to my new host.  I hope that it will also be moved to to a new Management site within two weeks.  Now I just have to create a blog format I am happy with.  I will probably go the Wordpress route (price is right!), but I will check around to see what else is available.

    The Project
This is going really well, and the initial wave should be wrapped up by the end of this week.  Hopefully the piece will be complete and be ready for publishing up by the end of next week

    Gamerscore Challenge
Well, I kicked the crap out of both XboxAmerica community members that were in the challenge to be the first to reach the 20K Gamerscore plate.  There was some crying a several excuses being made, but the bottom line is that I started in a 1,000+ point hole and ended up smoking the closest person by 1,800+ points.  Now they want to make a run at 25k....maybe I will let them get a 1,000 point lead on me and then beat em again!

    CES 2008
Even though next year's Consumer Electronics Show doesn't take place until January 7th - 10th, myself and several members of GamingNexus staff have been getting our hotel rooms, flights and registration complete as soon as possible.  Seems strange to be on it so soon, but Vegas (at least along The Strip) basically gets booked full that week, and special rates for attendees disappear quickly as the hotels book up.

I received my Media Badge confirmation late last week, and we plan to attend from Sunday the 6th until Wednesday evening the 9th.  If anyone is going, give me a shout out and we'll look to meet up out there at some point.

Track & Field is finally coming!
One game I spent an assload of quarters on in the Arcade was Track & Field.  It is finally hitting Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday (Aug 8), two long months after I had a chance to demo it in Chicago at the Gamerscoreblog Tour stop.  I will be downloading and playing a game before I set sail for work that day.

Grand Theft Auto IV delay will be more painful for Sony than Microsoft

I engaged in a spirited discussion with a colleague yesterday regarding whether Microsoft or Sony would take a greater hit due to the push out of Grand Theft Auto IV to 2008.  I thought Sony would take it like a night-stick to the back of the knees, while my colleague argued that Microsoft ponied up $50 million for exclusive content that they would not see their return on until next year.  I argued that the Xbox 360 killer app was to be Halo 3 and GTA IV, while highly anticipated, might be better off being pushed out.  He argued that Sony still had a strong lineup with Warhawk, Rachet & Clank and Lair, but IMO none of those titles look to be "that" game that would make you want to buy a console.

Frankly, at this point in time, selling the hardware is what it is all about for Sony.  Just ask them, they have said on numerous occasions that future sales of the PS3 would be buoyed by future game releases.  Now, I think their primary source for this optimism just vanished into the wispy air of 2008.  To put it bluntly, there are two items that will dictate why Sony takes this delay harder, and they are Halo 3 and 37 million.  As in the "Killer App" that the Xbox 360 is expecting in September (so the hard-core fans wont have a void) and the combined sales of all Grand Theft Auto titles on the Sony Playstation 2 (which includes three of the top four selling games of all-time on the stalwart console).

The Halo franchise is Xbox and Halo 3 was the most anticipated title since the 360 was announced.  Conversely for the Playstation, arguments could be made for some other games, but the Grand Theft Auto franchise is THE game for the Playstation 2 owners.  There are 37 million reasons (combined sales of GTA: Vice City (1st all-time - 13 mil), GTA: San Andreas (2nd all-time - 12 mil), GTA III (4th all-time - 11 mil) and GTA: Liberty City Stories (1 mill) why this is true (Don't forget the 1.5 mil GTA II sales on the original Playstation).

The only other game to even approach those kinds of numbers was the #3 all-time, Grand Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 mil).  If there was any one title that Sony was counting on to get out of its hardware sales funk, it would have been Grand Theft Auto IV.  History has proven that the Playstation fan base plays that game, and much like Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, many fans may have been waiting to purchase a PS3 when GTA IV became available.  While using past sales from the last-gen console may be suspect in predicting future sales, I think it is a good indicator of what the PS3 should expect from its fan base.

As for Microsoft, there is no doubt that such an anticipated title like GTA IV will be missed and the $50 million investment won't see returns until next year, but look at what else is dropping in 2007 in addition to Halo 3.  Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect and newcomer (former Sony exclusive) Assassin's Creed will all be available by year's end during the crucial Holiday selling season.  Throw in the cross-platform games such as EA and 2K's annual sports offerings, Blacksite, Guitar Hero III, Rock Band and TimeShift and the lineup is strong as ever.  Which is why a push out of GTA IV is not a bad thing in my opinion.  There is such a mass quantity of games dropping this Holiday season, that having GTA IV become available in a more "dead" time after the first of the year will be beneficial to the 360 and its more established owner base.  The Xbox 360 doesn't need GTA IV to spur holiday console sales (it would have been nice), but the PS3 really could have used that jolt.  Now, Sony may have to revert back to playing games with their pricing to put the shiny black box in America's living rooms....
